food allergy and intolerance

Food allergy & intolerance

Food allergies are very quick reactions happening almost immediately, often with alarming symptoms like swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue and throat. Difficulty breathing and in some instances, anaphylactic shock can occur. These reactions are powered by unique immune cells of the IgE antibody family.

Food intolerances involve the IgG antibody family and are much more complicated since the reactions can be delayed by as much as 48hours. It’s often the foods that we love the most and those which occur in our diet daily that become the culprits. Symptoms of food intolerance are vast and can include low immunity, frequent infection, headaches, skin problems, joint pains, catarrh, bloating, wind, constipation, diarrhoea or loose stools.

Trying to work out your allergies or intolerances through trial and error or by elimination diets can get stressful. Often the results can be confusing or even inconclusive.  A blood test is easy and lets you know exactly which foods you need to eliminate.
